Further, police report that he used his gun to attempt unsuccessfully to burglarize two Texan houses on August 16, 1997. When he attempted to flee, he tried to get money from Oscar Morales (16 years old). Matthew Horvarich was also shot in the shoulder. The shootings did not result in death and both victims survived.

Chester broke into John Henry Sepeda’s home while he was asleep in his bed. John woke up during the burglary. He tried to approach Chester, who was wearing a mask and shot him with his gun. Chester, 87, was committing burglary at the home of Etta Mae Saintllings. She was asleep beside her husband on November 15, 1997. Chester shot Etta dead after Etta woke and pulled out a gun. He proceeded to steal items as well as Etta’s gun before fleeing the scene.

Chester was acquainted with his next victim, Cheryl DeLeon, 40, since they had been co-workers for about 11 months in 1992 while working at a local Luby’s restaurant. As a result, he was familiar with her routine and waited for her in a storage shed in the backside of Cheryl’s home on November 20, 1997. Chester grabbed her as she was walking towards her house from her car. Chester grabbed her from the behind, and they fought. He then hit her with his gun. Chester claimed that the gun accidentally went off when he attempted to hit Cheryl.

Chester, his brother-in law, decided to murder Albert Bolden Jr., his 35-year old common-law brother. He claimed that Albert had abused her sister and also had set Chester up on an insinuated date with a transvestite. He lured Albert to a Port Arthur, Texas vacant house and luring him into a burglary. Only to kill him.

As per Chester, his last victim was Willie “Billy” Ryman III, 38. Erin DeLeon (17 years old) was attacked by him in her Port Arthur home. Tony was with Erin at the time. He attacked her while stealing jewelry, when Claire and Tim arrived. He tied Tim up, raped Erin as well as Claire while holding them hostage. Chester killed Willie (a firefighter uncle) as they tried to raped both girls.

How Did Elroy Chester Die?

Elroy Chester was known for his modus operandi, which involved him cutting telephone wires and unplugging the lights from the Port Arthur houses he tried to burglarize or attempt to. Willie’s murder was indicted against Chester on February 12, 1998. He pleaded guilty and threatened jurors, officers and prison guards. He did not show any remorse, and was sentenced on August 24, 1998 to death. It took the jury less than 12 minutes to deliberate before they handed down the sentence. This made it one of the fastest death sentences in American history.

Elroy, while in custody, admitted to the above crimes and his DNA linked him with the rapes. He claimed to have committed those crimes out of “hatred for white people” after he was involved in an altercation with a white prison guard while serving time Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Chester’s defense counsel filed numerous appeals on grounds of mental instability but was denied each time.

Although the execution was originally scheduled for April 24, 2013, the execution was delayed by technical errors in the execution warrant. Elroy was finally executed by lethal injection on June 12, 2013, at the Huntsville Unit of the Texas State Penitentiary, making him the 499th convicted killer to be executed in Texas. His remains are buried at the Captain Joe Byrd Cemetery in Huntsville, Texas, as per official records.
