Over five months, authorities conducted an undercover investigation that led to the discovery of corruption at Rikers Island prison in New York. The authorities learned that corrupt correction officers were involved in smuggling contraband into Rikers Island prison. On the latest episode of VH1′ ‘My True Crime Story,’ the viewers learn about Steven Dominguez, who got caught in the bust and later turned his life around. So, if you’re curious to find out more, here’s what we know.
Steven Dominguez is who?
Steven Dominguez was born and raised in New York City, where his mother later became a teacher in the city’s public schools while he worked hard to make extra money. He would sell sneakers and shovel snow off driveways to make extra money to support the family. Steven completed high school. After graduating, he went to college and started working for TSA.
Steven was raised around violence and drugs, but he tried to avoid them while he worked at Rikers Island. As an investigation will reveal, he became involved. Between February 25, 2014 and June 23, 2014, authorities carried out a sting operation using several undercover officers. This led to the arrests of Steven (then 26) and Divine Rahming, another corrections officer.
In order to conduct the investigation, undercover police officers assumed the identities of friends and families of prison inmates. They met with Steven (and Divine) as part of their efforts. In exchange for money, the duo offered to smuggle contraband in prison. The amount was between $500 and $900. According to authorities, Steven and Divine had met at least three times with undercover officers and were given fake oxycodone pills which they then smuggled into Rikers Island.
Steven also met with an undercover Drug Enforcement Agency agent in June 2014. Steven offered to help him transport drugs beyond prison walls using his badges, credentials, and other documents. The authorities found out that he had delivered what he believed to be cocaine to the DEA agent four days later. Steven added Divine to the equation in order to assist with these deliveries.
Also, Divine was found to have been involved with Yasel Subrez, the girlfriend and inmate George Ramos by investigators. Steven was given fake oxycodone by an undercover officer, which she then took to prison. Phone records also showed that he, Divine, Yasel, and Yasel were in communication. Divine and Divine discussed drug deals and money owed.
Where is Steven Dominguez Now?
Steven and Divine were both in possession cocaine and marijuana when they were arrested on June 14, 2014. The undercover operation also led to the involvement of many other officers in similar schemes. Steven was charged with receiving bribes and promoting prison contraband. He was also accused of criminal possession of controlled substances and conspiracy. He was eventually able to plead guilty and received an eight-year sentence.
Steven was sentenced to four years in prison and released in March 2020. It seems that his life has changed since then. Steven previously got his degree in criminal justice and forensic psychology and recently released a book titled ‘Across the Bridge: A Rikers Island Story,’ a thriller dealing with the goings-on at Rikers Island. To accompany the book, he has also created merchandise. We know that Steven is a New Yorker, but he enjoys traveling.
