Recap of Surface Episode 6
The fifth episode of ‘Surface’ ends on a cliffhanger after it is revealed that Sophie is the one who removed the money. Episode 6, titled ‘The Myth of California,’ begins as Sophie urges James to tell her everything from the beginning. And so he does.
They meet at a restaurant. Sophie is a member of staff and James is a guest that day. The man ordered a bottle of expensive wine to impress a client, but he leaves without giving James his business. James is approached by Sophie, who is a server. The two of them start to talk and, later that evening James takes Sophie to his house. But he later confesses that the house is actually his boss’s. He is only looking after it in their absence. They talk to each other throughout the night and can see the sun rising on the distant horizon.
James and Sophie subsequently begin dating, and James introduces Sophie to his two friends — Caroline and Harrison. Terrifyingly perceptive Sophie quickly discovers that James and Caroline were once in a relationship. She and Caroline became fast friends despite this. However. Harrison notices something is not right with Sophie, and he speaks to James about the matter. But the latter is so deeply in love, he doesn’t listen. Sophie is naturally charismatic. She weaves stories for James’ prospective clients, drawing them in and convincing them to sign with James’ firm.
Harrison confronts Sophie one evening. She accepts Harrison’s accusations and admits that James is a better person for her than she is. Sophie then adds that she is in a romantic relationship with James to be worthy of a long-term relationship. But, almost unavoidably, cracks begin to appear in their relationship. James is more successful than Sophie, and their relationship becomes more distant. They eventually separate. During one of the parties, Sophie entertains one of James’ potential clients just as she did before. But, this time, James stops her, claiming that they don’t need to do it any longer. They get into a huge fight. This is the night Sophie and Baden meet.
After discovering about Sophie’s infidelity, James has sex with Caroline. He later apologizes for his actions to Sophie and they seem to be able to move on. However, Sophie then takes the money she convinced James and tries to leave San Francisco. James is forced to confront the truth of their relationship.
Surface Episode 6: Sophie Stealth the Money
Sophie’s past in England is still shrouded in mystery. James is offered a version of her story, just like she does to her clients. While it’s likely that the version she tells James is closer to the truth than the others, that doesn’t necessarily mean that it contains no lies. As with most people, her motivations for the present actions are rooted in the past. She convinces James to invest more than 10 million dollars of the firm’s money into a project through her. The money never reaches the project. Sophie grabs the money and tries leaving San Francisco with the money. James finds out what she did and confronts her as she is about board the ship. James later discovers her note. This only reinforces the fact that she has left James.
James begins to believe that they have been given another chance, after the events that happened to Sophie. So, he tries to erase all evidence of Sophie’s past transgression in the hopes that they will have a better future. James tries unsuccessfully to convince Sophie to forget about her past. She is unlikely to follow his lead. Sophie seems to have lost any memory of her childhood in England and is determined to find answers.
