The detectives found blood on the floor of the bathroom and up the steps leading to the back yard of the Krieger house. The blood trail suggested that something had been carried up the stairs. Dan was asked about his last sighting of his daughter, and he explained that he hadn’t seen her since she went to bed. The officers suspected foul play and launched a search for Regina. However, Regina was still missing for more than a month. A group of horseback riders found her badly decayed body on the Snake River banks, just downstream of Minidoka Dam, on April 15, 1995.

The body of Regina was identified by investigators using her dental records. An autopsy report revealed that Regina suffered from multiple fatal stab wounds to her body. However, air embolism was the most probable cause of her death after her throat was slit from earto ear by the perpetrator. Her heart also had a penetrating cut, but the medical examiner concluded that it was done after her death.
